2002 APF State Conference

The 2002 APF State Conference was held at the 4H Center in Little Rock. Mr. Bob Blake runs such a great 4H Center. The rooms were so nice. The food tasted absolutely wonderful. You may find out anything about the 4H Center by the history on the walls. The lake and the mountains surrounding the 4H Center make you feel like you are in a valley of clean country air. It fills the soul with peace. At night the mist smoothly glides across the lake only to disappear before morning.

The conference was a great challenge for me. I met so many great people and

volunteered in many areas. I greeted new people who were hungry to know and be a part of People First! I let them know the number one rule was to, SMILE! People came from many

different counties, they were very tired. The excitement overwhelmed them so, that they had forgotten they were away from home. There were so many activities going on: talent show, dance, swimming and walking on hiking trails. The feeling of freedom and joy spread from one corner of the room to the next. My friends and I sat telling jokes at the dance under the stars and balloons that were shinning above our heads.

The State conference had such an impact on my life. It gave me strength, knowledge and stability to know how important People First is and can be for so many individuals. I had so many choices to learn from that would benefit me and my goals. I met so many people with disabilities that strive for their rights and opinions to be heard. We deserve the right to be part of our communities. All institutions should be shut down.

As morning came for us to leave, we shared hugs, tears and addresses. I was ready to take all that fell upon my mind back to Ft. Smith and share it with pride and hope that People First will expand even greater than it is today!

Sincerely,

Cindy Currie

MESSAGE FROM ARKANSAS PEOPLE FIRST STATE PRESIDENT

I trust each of us left our state conference with knowledge to take back to our local chapters as well as made new friends.

We must start thinking on how to make next years conference bigger and better. If anyone has any ideas please let us know.

We have approached the half way point for this year with most all of our goals completed. Now we must complete the rest as well as map out our game plan for next year.

I would like to thank everyone who took time out of your busy schedule to attend the Arkansas People First Advisor Retreat. Each of you showed a high level of commitment in building strong chapters in Arkansas.

Eric Treat

Meet APF State Board Member

Hi folks, I’m Shannon Rivas and I am currently representing Hot Springs on the Arkansas People First State Board.

I became involved with Arkansas People First in 1998. From 1999 to 2000, I was Vice President for Hot Springs Chapter and one of my favorite assignments as chapter officer was to conduct a presentation on "Autism".

I was born on February 12, 1978 in Hot Springs and was diagnosed with autism at the age of four which would lead me to the disability experience for the rest of my life.

I am a 1996 graduate of Hot Springs High School where I became involved with the Trojan Band, FBLA, FHA and Who’s Who Among High School Students.

I am currently working as the Local Arkansas People First Coordinator in Hot Springs. My job is to arrange the date, place and time for our monthly chapter meeting; get in touch with individuals by telephone; mail fliers to individuals; prepare the agenda and conduct the meetings & presentations.

Shannon won first place in the APF Talent Show at the State Conference in the music category when she jammed out on the drums.

TRANSPORTATION

It's Time to Make a Change

Transportation, if you are a person with a disability, you know how hard it can be to find transportation!

Central Arkansas Transit is trying to get a one-fourth penny sales tax on the upcoming ballot. The revenue/money would allow CAT to greatly improve the bus service to everyone, but especially to persons with disabilities. The Links paratransit service would double its capacity and provide night and Sunday service throughout the region so people could travel to jobs and events and church like everyone else. CAT needs a tax that provides stability, predictability, and enough money to increase service for all.

CAT needs letters of support for the one-fourth penny sales tax from the people who need this service and so an improved service can be offered. If this can be passed in Pulaski County, then maybe it will go state wide.

If you live in Pulaski County and want to see transportation improved, please educate the follow leaders by writing a letter of support. Any questions, call Keith Jones, CAT at 1-501-324-1447 or link here to email at:  kjones@cat.org or link here to visit their website at: www.cat.org
