DDC Conference Helped: Dreams Become Reality

Self-Determination— Dreams to Reality was the theme of this years Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council Annual State Conference on September 13th-14th at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs.

The conference was designed to explore the idea of self-determination through various presenters and workshops. We learned from presenter Jeff Keilson the four foundations of self-determination are:

1.Self-advocacy
2.Freedom
3.Authority
4.Responsibility

Communication and direct care staff were just a couple of workshops that touched on the characteristics of self-determination.

If you would like to know more about self-determination, please contact:

Do you receive disability benefits from Social Security or SSI?

Do you want to get a part time or full time job?

Well, Project Arkansas Work Incentive (A-WIN) is developed to help people with disabilities understand the choices for employment in Arkansas

Project A-WIN was established as a result of a nationwide initiative mandated by the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999. The purpose of A-WIN is to take some of the fear about loosing you benefits away.

The Project can also help you:

• understand how work will affect your benefits

• develop a plan to become self-supporting

• successfully navigate the maze of Social Security and SSI regulations concerning re-turning to work

• find out how work will affect your benefits and Medicare/ Medicaid

• get in touch with other agencies that can help you with vocational training and job placement

The Project is coordinated by Sources for Independent Living in Fayetteville with partnerships from the Centers for Independent Living around the state. Each CIL has a Benefits Specialist to assist people in their area.

If you are interested in participating in this project :

For more information on Project A-WIN, please call Toll free 1-888-284-7521.

Angela was born in Batesville on a Friday night at 10:30, June 9th 1961. For the first six months she was a happy baby. At 7 and a half months, Angela was diagnose with Bacterial Spinal Menigitis. She learned how to walk and talk again with her parents help. She had to fight her way through school because some people said she could not do the work, but she did. "I guess you could say I beat the school system," Angela said.
